Learning How to Run a Seminar (Lessons from Film and Faith 2)

January's been a busy month for The Garage. We held Basic Adobe Photoshop and Flash CS3 workshops, and Basic Adobe Illustrator CS3 ends on February 7. Cathy and I also attended the Film and Faith 2 seminar on January 12 and 13.

The two-day seminar was conducted at the Communication Foundation for Asia in Sta. Mesa. It was an interesting two days, and it would have been a very enlightening experience had I paid more attention. Instead, I spent half the time observing how CFA ran the seminar. I must admit that The Garage can certainly learn a lot from them.

The Good

  • Fr. Peter Malone, MSC, was an excellent speaker. He was entertaining, and he shared a wealth of knowledge about films and film appreciation.
  • They gave us a free copy of Fr. Malone's book. It didn't matter that the book design was rushed and the pictures were pixelated. They were still able to give away a 170-page book, and that was enough to impress the participants.
  • They were able to get a grant. That allowed them to keep fees low while still being able to provide food and a seminar kit.

The Not-Bad-But-Not-Great-Either

  • Only a few group activities. The discussions, especially on the Ten Commandments, made the room more lively. I wish they had more.
  • Lunch + rainy weather + dimmed lights + airconditioning is a terrible combination. No matter how good the speaker, or how interesting the topic, people will be dozing off in the audience.
